How to Care For, Store and Reuse a Pop-Up Backdrop Banner

A pop-up backdrop banner is one of the few pieces of exhibition kit that can genuinely pay for itself twice: once at the show it was bought for, and again every season after that. The frame usually outlives several graphics — what shortens its life is not the event floor, but the way it is cleaned, folded and stored between events.

Cleaning the Printed Fabric

  • Spot clean rather than wash. Most marks come off with a soft cloth, cool water and a small amount of mild soap.
  • Never use bleach, solvents or abrasive cleaners on a printed panel; they attack the ink and the fibre at the same time.
  • Air dry only. Lay the graphic flat or hang it to dry away from direct heat, and never put it in a tumble dryer.
  • Do not iron printed areas to chase out creases — fitting the graphic on the frame under tension is the correct fix.

Frame Care

  • Wipe the frame with a dry or slightly damp cloth after each event; dust and grit wear joints over time.
  • Inspect hinges, hubs and feet every time you pack down, and tighten anything that has worked loose.
  • Replace damaged connectors before they fail mid-show — spares are inexpensive compared with a display that will not stand.
  • If a mechanism feels stiff, follow the frame supplier's guidance rather than applying a general-purpose lubricant.

Folding and Packing

  1. Undo the zip or hook-and-loop strip and lift the graphic off the frame evenly.
  2. Fold along the creases already in the fabric rather than inventing new ones, especially across printed areas.
  3. Keep the printed side protected inside the bag, and store hardware in a separate pocket so metal cannot rub the fabric.
  4. Pack the frame only after the graphic is bagged, so nothing heavy rests on the print.

Storage Conditions

Do Avoid
Store dry, at room temperature Damp basements and garages where fabric can mildew
Keep the bag closed and off the floor Direct sunlight over long periods, which fades print
Stand or lay the display flat with nothing on top Vehicles that reach high temperatures in summer, and stacking heavy cases on the bag

Reusing the Frame With New Artwork

When the branding changes, the frame does not have to. Reordering the printed graphic alone keeps the display current at a fraction of the cost of a new one — which is worth confirming before you buy, because not every supplier supports a graphic-only reorder. The same logic applies to a campaign change: keep one frame per booth size and treat the printed panel as the part that gets refreshed.

A Simple Seasonal Routine

  • Before every event: open the frame, check joints and feet, unfold the graphic and inspect for marks, then refit and check tension.
  • After every event: wipe the frame, spot clean if needed, fold on existing creases, bag the graphic, and note any part that needs replacing.
  • Once a season: list the spares you have used and reorder before the next show, with enough lead time for production and shipping.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a printed backdrop banner be machine washed?

No. Spot cleaning with mild soap and cool water, followed by air drying, is the safe method. Machine washing risks shrinkage, colour loss and damage to the seams.

How should I store the display between events?

Frame and graphic in the carry bag, dry, out of direct sunlight, and not crushed under other equipment. Avoid hot vehicles for anything longer than a day.

When should I replace the graphic instead of the whole display?

Whenever the frame is still sound. Rebranding, a new campaign, or fading on the print are all reasons to reorder the panel rather than buy a new display.
